ERNIE
My husband and I had to put down our dog recently because of a sudden and terminal heart condition. As a way to say good-bye, I scribbled down a few lines here (even though my poetry is on par with a 12 year-old’s).
Ernie was a big yellow Labrador and my very good friend. He will be sorely missed.

Yellow
My friend is yellow furry love
that loped beside me when I ran
Deep waters of the seas he swam
the River and my pond on Holbrook land
My friend is a yellow sunshine beam
that touched my nose with a kiss of steam
He licked my tears and warmed my feet
and knocked my hand for a pat and a treat
Yellow, mellow, soft and sweet
Friendly to the ones he’d meet
On walkabout he did roam
the neighborhood on his own
My friend is a yellow golden lion
who wrestled a skunk and a snake and a Dane
His jaw was massive and white with fangs
But a Gentle Giant beneath his mane
He followed me behind the horse
stuck to the trail and stayed on course
He never asked for much at all
Just a bed and food and a bone and some balls
Somehow eleven years passed by
Big E stayed yellow to my eyes
It’s I that grayed and grew so old
Not my friend of fuzzy yellow gold
For he is the color of all things new
Like the morning sun
And the sparkle of dew
Soft and bright and warm to hug because
Yellow is the color of my canine love

Sometimes 12 year olds write some good stuff. It sometimes is brought on by canine love. Ernie was a good fellow. Ron
