This Sunday I’ll be heading to beautiful Asheville, North Carolina, for a small writers conference.

Writers conferences are great places to meet other writers and network. And for that reason it’s important that you do the following things: make a point to meet as many people as possible, sit with different people at meals, mingle, be relaxed, and the number one “meet other people rule”…don’t talk about yourself all the time. Pick out the workshops and sessions that will benefit you most and get there early because seating is sometimes and issue. Take notes, ask questions, befriend other successful writers that you find a connection with…be on a mentor hunt so to speak. Take business cards with you and pass them out. I like the ones with a photo because it helps place the name with a face. If you don’t have any you can go to Kinkos or online order from VistaPrint. They are very reasonable.

And finally what not to do at a conference…

Don’t take your manuscript with you to hand out.

Don’t obsess over getting the attention of one single writer, agent, or editor. This is only going to annoy them.

Don’t expect agents and editors to ask for your work. Usually if they want to hear from you they will hand you a business card or tell you how to submit to them. If they don’t do this after you pitch, then thank them for their time and move on.
